Girls’ Basketball Holds Off Rival St. Ursula Academy at Home, 50-45

The Central Catholic girls’ basketball team returned to its winning ways on Thursday, claiming a 50-45 victory against St. Ursula Academy in the Sullivan Center. With the hard-fought win, CCHS improves to 16-2 overall, 10-1 in the Three Rivers Athletic Conference.

Senior Jai’Lynne Hitt-Swartz led the Scarlet & Gray with 4 treys and a game-high 16 points.

Junior Brooklyn Vaughn and classmate Corniya Clay each added 13 points for the host Fighting Irish, helping them successfully bounce back from Monday’s loss to Fremont Ross. Vaughn also ripped down a squad-best 11 rebounds to post yet another double-double.

Ashley Zawisza paced the Arrows (9-9, 4-7 TRAC) with 14 points, while Carlee Wiczynski had 11 points.

Along with Thursday’s win, CCHS swept the regular-season series vs. SUA. Back on Dec. 12, Central Catholic defeated St. Ursula Academy, 54-48, on the road. More importantly, they remain in 1st place in the TRAC standings with 3 league games remaining.

Earlier in the evening, the CCHS freshman team registered a 32-20 victory against the Arrows, while the junior varsity squad suffered a 42-35 home setback.

Ranked No. 2 in Division II state poll for the 2nd-straight week, Central Catholic returns to the hardwood against Clay on Monday, Jan. 30. The opening tip versus the Eagles is scheduled for 7:30 pm in Potter Field House. Tickets for Monday’s league matchup MUST be pre-purchased online at bit.ly/3DgukzS. Back on Dec. 15, CCHS defeated Clay, 62-32, at home.
