Girls’ Basketball Runs Away from Marian at Home, 55-41
The Central Catholic girls’ basketball team secured a 55-41 victory against Marian on Wednesday in the Sullivan Center. With the home win, the Fighting Irish improve to 8-5 overall, 5-1 in the Catholic High School League.
Playing its 1st home game since December 30, CCHS jumped out to 36-19 lead vs. the Lady Mustangs in the 1st half to establish control of the conference matchup.
Senior Corniya Clay paced Central Catholic with a game-high 18 points, while classmate Brooklyn Vaughn contributed 14 points, a squad-best 12 rebounds, 5 assists, and 4 steals to post a double-double. This duo accounted for 19 of the team’s 36 points in the opening half.
The Fighting Irish also benefited from 9 points from sophomore Nina Stevens, helping them bounce back from Saturday’s loss vs. Father Gabriel Richard.
The Lady Mustangs (7-6, 4-3 CHSL) were led by the duo of McKenzie Swanson and McKenley Reid with 14 and 13 points, respectively.
Earlier in the evening, the CCHS freshman team suffered a 28-13 setback against Marian, while the junior varsity squad tallied a close 23-21 home loss.
Central Catholic will return to the court against Start this evening, January 25, at 6:15 p.m. in the Sullivan Center. Earlier this season, the Fighting Irish defeated the Spartans, 66-33, on the road.
