Girls’ Basketball Trounces Rival Whitmer in Regular-Season Finale on Road, 62-39

The Central Catholic girls’ basketball team wrapped up its regular season with a dominating 62-39 victory against rival Whitmer on Thursday in the Whitmer Field House. With the impressive road triumph, CCHS improves to 20-2 overall, 13-1 in the Three Rivers Athletic Conference.

Ranked tied for the top spot in this week’s Associated Press Division II state poll, the 2-time reigning TRAC champions were paced by junior Brooklyn Vaughn with 22 points and 13 boards to post yet another double-double.

Senior Mary Ellis added 14 points, followed closely by classmate Jai’Lynne Hitt-Swartz and junior Clay with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Sydney Borer led host Whitmer (10-12, 10-4 TRAC) with 12 points, while Madison Welch had 10 points.

Earlier in the evening, the CCHS freshman team suffered a 35-26 loss against Whitmer, while the junior varsity squad claimed a 60-47 road win.

Central Catholic, the No. 1 seed in the sectional tourney draw for the Whitehouse District, returns to the hardwood against No. 8 seed Woodward on Thursday, Feb. 16. The opening tip versus the Polar Bears is scheduled for 6 pm at Liberty Center High School. A year ago, the Fighting Irish captured their 1st district title since 2016.

Tickets for next Thursday’s postseason contest MUST be pre-purchased online at OHSAA.org/tickets (Basketball, Basketball – Girls, Division II, Region 6, Northwest 3, Select Game). Reminder, no tickets will be available to purchase at the gate. All tourney tickets are General Admission. Tickets cost $6 for students and $8 for adults. In addition, all students MUST purchase a ticket to attend Thursday’s contest.
