Nine Football Players Garner All-Ohio Laurels
Nine members of the Central Catholic football team earned All-Ohio Division II accolades, the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association announced on Wednesday. The Fighting Irish’s 9 honorees are the most by any school in Northwest Ohio in Divisions II-VII.
Four Fighting Irish made 1st-team All-Ohio. They were senior RB Chris Edmonds, senior LB Cody Schuberg, senior DB Braden Awls, and junior DL Michael Cannings II.
Edmonds, who tallied a team-high 2,130 yards on 311 carries and a squad-best 34 TDs, is collecting all-state recognition for the 2nd-straight year. The 2022 TRAC Offensive Player of the Year was selected honorable mention All-Ohio a season ago.
In addition, junior OL Marc Nave garnered 2nd-team honors, while the quartet of senior PK Brian Bishop, senior LB Deandre Ellis, senior DB Braiden Vargas, and junior OL Kendric Bankston received honorable mention laurels.
The Fighting Irish are coming off a historic 2022 campaign that saw them capture their 5th OHSAA state championship in program history (1962, 2005, ‘12, ‘14, ‘22). CCHS secured the D-II state crown with postseason victories against Ashland, 69-7, Avon Lake, 21-0, Medina Highland, 42-6, Avon, 28-20, Kings Mills Kings, 52-49, and most recently Akron Archbishop Hoban, 28-21. The Scarlet & Gray finished with a 15-1 overall ledger and a perfect 7-0 mark in the TRAC, establishing a school record for wins in a season.
