Owen Thompson Named Mercy Health Unsung Player of the Year

Central Catholic senior football player Owen Thompson has been named the National Football Foundation/Mercy Health Unsung Player of the Year. Thompson, who will receive a scholarship as the Mercy Health Unsung POY, served as the Fighting Irish’s long snapper the past two seasons.

The foundation honors an outstanding practice player, a lineman that graded out well and/or exceeded expectations, or a special teams’ player that delivers. Equally important is the effort of the student-athlete in the classroom, where they must maintain at least a 3.2 grade-point average.

Thompson, who will attend Bowling Green State University in the fall, helped CCHS post a 6-1 overall record in 2020, including a perfect 4-0 ledger in the Three Rivers Athletic Conference.

The Toledo/Wistert chapter of the National Football Foundation was organized in 1962 by a group of Toledo friends, led by former University of Michigan All-American “Whitey” Wistert. The main function of the organization is to recognize deserving student-athletes that excel on the field, in the classroom and in their community. The local chapter also recognizes the contributions of Coaches, Officials and players that have overcome obstacles to play the game of football. Throughout the years, over 1,600 student-athletes have been honored into the National Football Foundation – Toledo/Wistert Chapter – Hall of Fame and over $325,000 in scholarships have been awarded.
