Three Fighting Irish Named Distinguished Scholar-Athletes by National Football Foundation

Central Catholic senior football players Giovanni DeSantis, Tae’Shaun Johnson and Chris Sennett have been honored by the National Football Foundation, the Toledo/Wistert Chapter as scholar-athletes for the 2020 season.

To be considered for this distinguished honor, a student-athlete must be a first-team all-league or all-district player, have a minimum 3.2 grade-point average, serve their school community, and possess outstanding character.

In addition to all three student-athletes being first-team All-TRAC, Sennett was named second-team All-Ohio as an offensive lineman and Johnson earned honorable mention all-state accolades as a wide receiver.

Johnson has accepted a scholarship to Bowling Green State University, Sennett will play at Wayne State University, and DeSantis is undecided at this time

The aforementioned trio helped the Fighting Irish finish 6-1 overall in the fall, a perfect 4-0 in the Three Rivers Athletic Conference, and secure their third-straight league title.

The Toledo/Wistert chapter of the National Football Foundation was organized in 1962 by a group of Toledo friends, led by former University of Michigan All-American “Whitey” Wistert. The main function of the organization is to recognize deserving student-athletes that excel on the field, in the classroom and in their community. The local chapter also recognizes the contributions of Coaches, Officials and players that have overcome obstacles to play the game of football. Throughout the years, over 1,600 student-athletes have been honored into the National Football Foundation – Toledo/Wistert Chapter – Hall of Fame and over $325,000 in scholarships have been awarded.
