Track & Field Competes at TRAC Championship
The Central Catholic girls’ and boys’ track & field teams competed at the Three Rivers Athletic Conference Championship late last week at Whitmer Memorial Stadium.
The Fighting Irish girls’ squad finished second among eight schools with 114 points, while the boys’ team placed fifth with 85 points.
The girls’ team secured seven first-place finishes at the two-day event at Whitmer High School, while the boys’ team captured the top spot in six events.
On the girls’ side, freshman Nyla King was part of a squad-best four first-place finishes. Individually, King crossed the finish line ahead of the competition in the 100-meter dash (12.51) and 200-meter dash (25.0). She also was part of the winning team in the 4x100-meter relay (48.77) and 4x200-meter relay (1.44.02). King set a new meet record in the 200-meter dash, eclipsing the old mark of 25.26.
Also capturing first-place finishes for the CCHS girls’ team in individual events were junior Mary Ellis in the 400-meter dash (57.57) and classmate Jayla Watson in the 300-meter hurdles (46.43).
In the relay’s, senior Tianna Davis ran the opening leg in all three of CCHS’s first-place finishes (4x100-meter relay, 4x200-meter relay, 4x400-meter relay), while sophomore Taylor Scribner, King and Ellis were each part of two victorious relays.
On the boys’ side, junior Solomon King notched a team-high four first-place finishes. Individually, King finished first in the 100-meter dash (10.74) and 200-meter dash (21.40). He also ran the anchor leg of the victorious 4x-100-meter relay (43.30) and 4x200-meter relay (1:28.49). King established new records in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes, shattering the previous marks of 10.78 and 21.53, respectively.
Senior Sam Lee won the high jump (6’2”) and ran the 1st leg of the victorious 4x200-meter relay and the 3rd leg on the 4x400-meter relay (3:22.67).
The Fighting Irish will return to the track on Thursday, May 19 for the Division II District Championships at Oak Harbor High School. The event is slated to begin at 5 pm. The second day of the district meet will take place on Saturday, May 21 at 10 am.
