Track & Field Secures 5 Titles at Division II State Championship

The Central Catholic boys’ & girls’ track & field teams wrapped up competition at the Division II State Championship on Saturday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on the campus of The Ohio State University. The 2 programs combined to capture 5 state titles at the 2-day meet.

The Fighting Irish girls’ squad finished 3rd overall with 39 points, while the boys’ team placed tied for 7th with 20 points.

On the girls’ side, CCHS successfully defended its state championships in both the 4×100- and 4×200-meter relay. The quartet of senior Jayla Watson, junior Taylor Scribner, junior Jara Johnson, and sophomore Nyla King crossed the finish line 1st in the 4×100-meter relay (48.21), while the team of Johnson, Scribner, senior Mary Ellis, and King placed 1st in the 4×200-meter relay (1:41.52). In addition, King placed 1st in the 100-meter dash (10.89) to be a part of a team-high 3 state championships.

In other individual events, Ellis placed 4th in the 400-meter dash (56.93), Scribner finished 6th in the 100-meter dash (12.23), and Watson captured 8th place in the 300-meter hurdles (45.85).

On the boys’ side, senior Solomon King secured a state title in the 100-meter dash (10.34), running a D-II record in the preliminary round. In addition, senior Donovan Hooker, King, freshman Ian Smith, and senior RJ Maddox Jr. took 1st place in the 4x100-meter relay (41.54).
