Tye Turner Named New CCHS Cross Country Coach

Tye Turner has been named the new boys’ and girls’ cross country coach for the Fighting Irish, CCHS Athletics Director Greg Dempsey recently announced. Turner has taught math and science classes at Central Catholic for seven years, and his daughter, Sarah, will be a sophomore at CCHS this fall.

“We are excited that Tye will be our new cross country coach,” said Dempsey. “He has been a key member of our faculty in developing and teaching students at Central Catholic, and we are confident in his ability to lead and develop our student-athletes in cross country this fall.”

Although this is his first coaching position, Turner is a runner himself and he wants to share his love for the sport with his students. “The students in cross country learn a lifelong skill, and I enjoy running myself,” he explained. “It’s a good combination of skill with a fit and healthy lifestyle.”

Turner has competed in the Dart Frog Dash 5K at the Toledo Zoo, as well as in a team relay with other Central Catholic faculty and staff members at the Glass City Marathon. “The experience was a blast! We all got along well, encouraged each other, and formed a bond running together.”

Turner feels that coaching is about more than just the athletic competition, and he is already setting goals for the upcoming season. “I hope to continue the tradition of having good athletes, but more importantly, good people,” he stressed. “The cross country program always produces excellent student-athletes, with the emphasis on life skills and attitudes along with the skills of running. I hope the team members take pride in themselves and push to be the best version of themselves on and off the field.”

Turner and the Fighting Irish will begin their fall season at the Mel Brodt Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 4 on the campus of Bowling Green State University.
